What is a rail grinding vehicle?
A rail grinding vehicle is a self-propelled machine that carries one or more grinding heads along the rail and presses abrasive wheels against the rail head to remove a controlled layer of metal. Its job is to restore the rail to its target profile and clear surface damage — corrugation, fatigue cracks, blueing and gauge-corner wear — without removing more steel than the defect requires. The category spans everything from a road-rail unit for a single weld to a 96-stone grinding train working a main line at night.

That last row is where most quality problems start. Traction speed is not a transport figure — it is a process parameter. Run too fast and the wheel skips and burns the surface; run too slow and the machine removes more metal than the profile needs.

These are all Molaton products — the product brand of RailwayCare, which has manufactured rail grinding wheels since 2004 and drafted the industry standard JB/T 11431 for them. On the vehicle side, Molaton wheels are specified against demanding acceptance figures: an average life of at least 50 km on the GMC-96B, no continuous blueing of the workpiece, a workpiece temperature below 130 °C within 30 seconds, contact pressure not below 10 kN, and a burst test at 5700 rpm for 30 seconds without fracture. Independent testing by the Zhengzhou Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 2024 took a G1b 260x90x153 wheel to 4775 rpm for 30 s without fracture and on to 6354 rpm without burst, with unbalance measured at 21 g.
Field results from the same vehicles follow the specification. On the Hefei-Wuhan high-speed line in 2020 the wheels averaged 214.22 pass-km each at 4.28 pass-km per mm of wear against 3.27 for the reference product, with no continuous blueing. On the Yiyang line, five possession windows covered 145 pass-km at an average consumption of 25.45 mm per wheel — 5.7 pass-km/mm — with the vehicle running at 12 km/h and 15.6 kW grinding power.
