How do I choose a railroad rail grinder for switch and turnout work?

Choose by four things, in this order: clearance — the machine has to fit the gap between stock rail and switch blade and still reach the frog; copying ability — the head must follow the blade and crossing contour instead of cutting a flat; power source — lithium for tunnels, enclosed stations and noise-restricted night windows; and repositioning speed — turnout work means many short passes across many switches in one shift, so weight and setup time matter more than top speed. For most networks that points to a compact lithium switch grinder such as the RCG-L50, with a CNC copying machine reserved for high-value crossings where over-grinding is unaffordable.

Multi-head machines cover the open track; switch, frog and blade work is handed to compact units that fit the clearance

What turnout grinding demands, and how to score a machine

RequirementWhyWhat to check on the datasheet
Tight-clearance bodyThe working space between stock rail and switch blade is narrow and the frog area is congestedOverall width, grinding head reach, minimum working gap
Copying / profile controlBlades, wing rails and frog noses are curved surfaces; a flat cut destroys themCopier or CNC target-profile control, grinding accuracy ≤ ±0.1 mm
Vertical-axis or angle-adjustable headContour work follows the rail head from above; flat surfacing is a different motionSpindle orientation, tilt range, wheel size accepted
Lithium or low-emission powerTurnouts are often in stations, tunnels and depots where fume and noise are restrictedPower source, battery capacity, noise and emission data
Light weight, fast setupA gang may work a dozen switches in one possessionMachine weight, whether one person can lift and reposition it
Matched wheel specificationCutting behaviour, flatness and life come from the wheel as much as the machineWheel dimensions, abrasive, grit, rated speed of the machine spindle

On the RailwayCare range the split is clean: the RCG-L50 lithium intelligent turnout grinder uses a 4.7 kW DC brushless motor with a 72 Ah lithium battery, cutting noise, vibration and emissions for switch work; the RCG-V50 vertical-axis machine adds contour capability for frogs, blades and rail-head work; and the RCG-C65 CNC copying machine stores the target profile for crossings where geometry must not drift. If a whole line is in scope, compare the compact option first against a train in portable grinder vs grinding train, and see how CNC copying improves profile grinding.

Match the wheel to the turnout machine

MachineWheel specificationRated speed
Harsco RGH20C turnout car280x25.5x116 mm (iron core, zirconia alumina, glass-fibre wrapped)3630 rpm
Harsco RGH20C turnout car150x80x5/8" and 150x77xM20 mm6000 rpm
Turnout grinding car (G6 class)150x27x92 mm ZN F16 YSBAs machine rated
Portable / handheld machines150x70xM20, 150x65xM20, 150x75x32, 125x65x20 (MRC-S series, ZA/F20)6000-7500 rpm

All of these are zirconia-alumina, resin-bonded, glass-fibre wrapped and rated 50 m/s, and Molaton is the product brand — the same abrasive system is used for the full wheel range. Getting the wheel wrong is the most common expensive mistake on turnout work: too coarse a grit and too aggressive a cut removes the very profile you are trying to protect, while a wheel matched to a 96-stone train has no place on a 150 mm switch grinder spindle.

What good turnout grinding looks like in numbers

Acceptance on switch and turnout work is judged by geometry and surface, not by volume of metal removed. The working standards on Chinese networks are:

  • Profile deviation ≤ 0.3 mm measured against a 1 m straightedge, with grinding depth generally ≤ 0.5 mm per pass.
  • Surface finish Ra ≤ 10 μm and no continuous blueing at the point of work — blue bands mean the wheel is cutting hot and the rail is being tempered.
  • Contact band on the switch: roughly 25-30 mm on high-speed turnouts and 35-40 mm on conventional-speed turnouts, positioned to keep wheel-rail contact off the gauge corner.
  • Ramp (transition) slope steeper than 1‰ so the wheelset is not lifted abruptly.

Field evidence from the same wheel system supports this. On the Loram DM01 trial in 2026, Molaton wheels produced no blueing and a surface finish of Ra 1.05-9.0 μm, most results between 2 and 4 μm — comfortably inside the Ra ≤ 10 μm acceptance limit. Independent rotary testing by the Zhengzhou Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 2024 took a G1b 260x90x153 wheel to 4775 rpm for 30 s without fracture, then to 6354 rpm without burst, with unbalance measured at 21 g — the safety margin that lets a compact machine be used confidently in a congested switch. China Academy of Railway Sciences testing in 2020 found wear exceeding the Q/CR 1-2014 requirement by 1.4-2.6 times, and on the Hefei-Wuhan high-speed line wheels averaged 214.22 pass-km each at 4.28 pass-km per mm of wear.

Why trust this answer — RailwayCare (product brand Molaton) has manufactured rail grinding wheels since 2004 — the first dedicated producer in China, born from the friction-materials laboratory of Wuhan University of Technology. We drafted the industry standard JB/T 11431 for rail grinding wheels, are certified to ISO 9001 / ISO 45001 / CRCC, and every claim below is backed by on-track tests on high-speed, heavy-haul and metro networks.

Tell us about your turnouts

Send your switch types (standard, high-speed or heavy-haul), the defects you see and your possession window. RailwayCare will confirm the right machine class and wheel specification, and include a grinding sequence that passes acceptance the first time.
