Grinding Acceptance Standards Reflect the Rigorous Requirements of Rail Maintenance -- Only Superior Products Can Achieve An Optimal Rail Profile.

Jun 30,2026
Rail grinding is a highly technical task in railway line maintenance. The quality of the grinding directly affects the stability of train operations and the service life of the rails. Relevant standards clearly outline the technical requirements for rail grinding operations; let’s take a look at them today.

Rail Grinding Falls into Three Categories, Each with Its Own Specific Requirements

Rail grinding is not limited to a single type; depending on the objective, it is categorized into three main types: pre-grinding, preventive grinding, and corrective grinding.

Pre-grinding is performed after new rails are laid to remove the surface decarburized layer and minor damage incurred during installation, giving the rails a good "start."

Preventive grinding is performed before serious rail defects develop; by improving the wheel-rail contact relationship through grinding, it delays the onset of issues such as fatigue cracks and wear.

Corrective grinding is performed when defects such as corrugation or fish-scale cracking have already appeared on the rails, with the aim of removing these defects.
Each of these grinding methods has its own specific role, but regardless of the method used, the final result must pass inspection.

Grinding Acceptance: The Numbers Tell The Story

How do you assess quality after grinding? It’s not enough to simply look at whether the surface is shiny; you need data to back it up.

In accordance with the provisions of Clause 5.2.2 and Table 5.2.2-1, the deviations of the inner gauge face of the rail head, the rail crown surface, the weld crown surface, and the inner gauge face of the weld—following rail grinding—are all controlled within the range of 0 to +0.2 mm. The precision requirement is extremely high; even a slight deviation can lead to issues with wheel-rail contact, causing vibration and noise, and potentially compromising operational safety.

Building upon traditional acceptance criteria, the latest industry standards introduce the concept of the Grinding Quality Index (GQI). This metric comprehensively evaluates grinding quality by assessing the degree of conformity between the measured profile and the target profile; a higher GQI value indicates superior grinding performance.
Only High-quality Grinding Wheels Can Produce A Superior Profile
Given such rigorous acceptance standards, what tools are used to perform the grinding operations? The key lies in the rail grinding wheel.

A rail grinding wheel is far more than a simple "whetstone"; it is composed of abrasive material, a bonding agent, and a core structure, with the abrasive being the core component. Common abrasives include corundum and silicon carbide, as well as harder materials like diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN). Different types of grinding wheels are suited to specific grinding applications:

Diamond and zirconia-alumina grinding wheels:: These offer extreme hardness and excellent wear resistance, making them ideal for the high-precision grinding required by high-speed and heavy-haul railways, effectively ensuring the desired grinding profile and surface quality.

Grinding wheel performance directly impacts grinding efficiency and determines whether the final profile meets acceptance standards. A high-quality grinding wheel must deliver high grinding efficiency, low consumption, and durability, all while avoiding thermal damage (burning) to the rail surface during the process.

Why Choose Us?

In the face of increasingly stringent rail grinding acceptance standards, we focus on the development and production of high-performance rail grinding wheels to help your grinding operations pass acceptance smoothly.

Suitable for diverse grinding scenarios: We offer grinding wheel solutions featuring various abrasive and bond formulations tailored to specific needs—including pre-grinding, preventive grinding, and corrective grinding—with products designed for high-speed rail, conventional lines, turnouts, and metro systems alike.

Meets high-precision grinding requirements: Our grinding wheels utilize premium abrasives and high-strength bonding, ensuring structural integrity and safety during operation; they enable effective control of profile deviations, providing a reliable foundation for meeting the +0.2mm acceptance standard.

Balances efficiency and durability: By optimizing the wheel's structural design, we extend service life and reduce replacement frequency, thereby lowering overall grinding costs while maintaining high grinding efficiency.
