How to choose the right rail grinding wheel for your equipment?

Selecting the correct RailwayCare/Molaton rail grinding wheel requires matching five parameters: abrasive grain type (ZA for hard rail, AlOx for general use), grit size (F16-F36 for stock removal, F46-F80 for profiling), bond hardness (grades H-P matched to 260-380 HB rail), wheel dimensions matching grinder arbor and bore, and speed rating exceeding grinder max RPM with 15%+ safety margin.

Parameter 1: Abrasive Grain Type Selection

  • Zirconia Alumina (ZA): Self-sharpening, 2-3x longer life on 260-380 HB rail. For mainline production grinding at 200-400 N pressure. Premium choice for Loram/Harsco/Speno trains.
  • Aluminum Oxide (AlOx): Cost-effective for light-duty finishing on 200-300 HB rail. Good for switch/crossing applications.
  • Silicon Carbide (SiC): Hardest common abrasive (Knoop 2500+). For manganese steel frogs (400+ HB). Brittle—requires lower pressure.
  • Ceramic Alumina (SG): Advanced microfracturing, 50-80% longer life than AlOx. For precision profile grinding (<0.1mm tolerance).

Parameter 2: Grit Size Impact

Coarse (F16-F24): 0.3-1.0mm/pass removal for severe defects—deep corrugation, heavy RCF. Medium (F30-F46): 0.1-0.3mm/pass, Ra 6.3-12.5um finish—most common general maintenance range. Fine (F60-F80): 0.05-0.1mm/pass, Ra 3.2-6.3um for final profile finishing. F30 recommended for routine preventive grinding; F24 for corrective defect removal.

Parameters 3-5: Bond, Dimensions, Speed Rating

  • Bond Hardness (H-P): Soft bonds (H-J) for hard rail 300-380 HB—releases grains, prevents glazing. Medium (K-M) for general 260-300 HB. Hard (N-P) for soft rail 200-260 HB. RailwayCare achieves +/-1 grade tolerance vs industry +/-2.
  • Dimensions: Geismar MP12/MP23: 125-150mm, 22.23mm bore. Robel 13.44/13.48: 150-230mm, 22.23mm. Robel 13.61: 230-300mm, 22.23/25.4mm. Train-mounted: 250-305mm, 150-203mm bore. RailwayCare offers custom 100-915mm diameters.
  • Speed Rating: Wheel max RPM must exceed grinder no-load RPM by 15%+. Marked on every RailwayCare wheel label. Tested to 1.5x rated speed per EN 12413.
