Project Background

The Wuhan–Zhuzhou section of the Beijing–Guangzhou Railway is one of China’s busiest rail corridors, handling hundreds of passenger and freight trains daily. The line features numerous small-radius curves and complex turnout zones, placing immense stress on the track structure. Traditional inspection methods using manual gauges and optical levels were slow, labor-intensive, and unable to provide the comprehensive, high-precision data needed for proactive maintenance within the limited nightly “maintenance window” (typically 3-4 hours). A more efficient and accurate solution was required to ensure operational safety and meet stringent regulatory standards.

Solution Implemented

RailwayCare’s RCI GNSS Track Geometry Trolley was selected for its proven ability to deliver high-precision, high-efficiency static surveys. The system integrates multi-constellation GNSS receivers with a high-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) to provide continuous, absolute positioning and attitude data, independent of ground control points.

Key Features Utilized:
●  High Accuracy: Achieves ±0.30 mm precision for gauge and level, and ±0.50 mm for alignment and vertical profile over a 10-meter chord.
●  High Efficiency: Operates at a survey speed of 4-5 km/h, allowing a team of two to inspect up to 15 km of track in a single maintenance window.
●  Comprehensive Data Capture: Simultaneously measures all core static geometry parameters: gauge, level (cant), alignment (track direction), vertical profile (longitudinal irregularity), and twist. A dedicated module was used for precise turnout gauge offset measurements.
Seamless Workflow: Data is automatically processed and georeferenced, generating standard-compliant reports and GIS-ready datasets for direct integration into the railway’s asset management system.

Results Achieved

The deployment of the RCI GNSS Trolley from October 2025 to March 2026 yielded significant operational improvements:
Efficiency Gains: Inspection speed increased by a factor of 20+ compared to traditional manual methods. A task that previously required a team of 8 workers a full week to complete could now be finished by 2 workers in a single night.
Cost Reduction: Labor and logistical costs associated with static geometry inspections were reduced by approximately 60%.
Improved Maintenance Targeting: The high-density, precise data enabled maintenance teams to identify and prioritize subtle deviations before they escalated into critical issues. This led to a 25% reduction in reactive maintenance orders related to track geometry over the six-month period.
Enhanced Safety & Reliability: The consistent, objective data provided a robust foundation for predictive maintenance planning, contributing to the safe and uninterrupted operation of this critical mainline during a period of peak traffic.
